The Centre for Water Resources is basically a renamed and upgraded Hydraulics Division, Department of Civil Engineering, of the erstwhile College of Engineering, Guindy. It is the first advanced multi-disciplinary Centre of the University, started one year later than the inception of the University itself. The initial Postgraduate degree introduced in 1956 by the Hydraulics Division was M.Sc. (Engineering) in Advanced Hydraulics, Dam Construction and Irrigation Engineering. This degree has gone through several changes and the present one offered by the Centre is two years M.E. in Hydrology and Water Resources Engineering. Realising the importance of Irrigation Water Management, the Centre introduced an M.E. degree in Irrigation Water Management as one of the first Universities in India to do so. Basically, water resources control and management has been under the purview of engineers in India and the World as a whole. Engineers, being technical, started to realise the deficiencies in water management which has become complicated due to the changed scenario of social and economical implications. This has been appreciated during the 1980s and attempts were made to introduce these components in irrigation water management. However, the water resources in general is still in the hands of technical people and there is a need to improve this as in the case of irrigation water. Hence, the Centre for Water Resources in currently focusing its attention in looking at the water resources management holistically by integrating all aspects such as sociology, economics, gender issues, small and marginal water users, etc.
