The proposed program will bring the focus on integrated approach to water resources management that is so far left unattended. South Asia, as a node of population explosion, needs to make judicious and more equitable use of available water resources. Inefficient and ill-managed water would induce disasters rather than contributing to the national and regional development. Nepal Engineering College (nec) as a premiere technical institution in Nepal has taken a significant share of burden to fulfill these objectives. It has been offering for example, M.Sc. programs in Construction Management and Natural Resources Management on its own since 1999. Recently, nec has worked with Farmer Managed Irrigation System Promotion Trust (FMIST) to formulate BE Civil curriculum on irrigation with especial focus on FMIS by building up a core group at nec. Thus it has been able to imbibe the “Best Practices” of Farmers managed irrigation system of the past. It is expected that this work will find appropriate solutions to the ill-focused irrigation course presently offered in Nepalese engineering colleges. The proposed program is simply one more logical step that nec has envisaged. The program will help nec in firmly presenting itself as a reputable center of expertise and as a focal point in a South Asian network of leading institutions that are committed to interdisciplinary approach to integrated water resources management.

Main Activities
