Peri-urban Water Security in a Context of Urbanization and Climate Change: A Riview of Concepts and Relationships

First in a series, this paper by Dr. Vishal Narain, seeks to contribute to developing a shared understanding of some of the core concepts related to water security in a peri-urban context. Towards the end of the paper, an analytic framework is proposed to guide the research and seeks to provide some common analytic framework to facilitate convergence across the research locations.

Water Security in Peri-urban Khulna: Adapting to Climate Change and Urbanization

This paper is an assessment of how urban and peri-urban residents of Khulna city in Bangladesh have been suffering from problems related to water access and water in-security due to urbanization and climate change impacts. It dwells on the water related vulnerabilities of various livelihood groups in the peri-urban areas of Khulna. Further, the degradation of river water quality resulting from urban activities such as wastewater discharge and dumping of solid waste, and the vulnerabilities due to climate change are also addressed.

Capacity building of Junio Engineers from Public Health Engineering Department, Gurgaon

As part of the Peri-urban Water Security Project in SaciWATERs, the Junior Engineers of Public Health and Engineering Department (from Sohna, Gurgaon and Faridabad divisions) were involved in a Capacity Building Training Programme in Gurgaon on April, 12, 2012, to brief them on basic concepts of peri-urban and IWRM.

Inception Workshop - Water Security in Peri-Urban South Asia

The Inception Workshop for the project “Water Security in Peri-Urban South Asia: Adapting to Climate Change and Urbanisation” was held from August 16 – 20, 2010 in Hotel Radisson, Kathmandu. The Workshop was coordinated by Dr. Anjal Prakash (Project Director, Peri-Urban Project) from SaciWATERs, Hyderabad, and was organised by Nepal Engineering College (NEC), Kathmandu.

Scoping Study Report

A scoping study was carried out from August 2010 – January 2011. It was an exploratory phase investigating the key peri-urban issues in the research sites and the impact of changing peri-urban landscape on water security and climate vulnerability. Four scoping study reports consolidate the outcome of this study.
