The project is being coordinated by SaciWATERs, Hyderabad, India. SaciWATERs focuses on transforming water resources knowledge systems, key ideas being an interdisciplinary approach to understanding water resources issues, from a pro-poor, human development perspective, with an emphasis on exchange, interaction and collaboration at South Asia level.

Partner Institutions


Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) is the oldest and leading university in Bangladesh in the area of technology. IWFM is a premier institute for the advancement of knowledge and development of human resources in water and flood management.

Nepal Engineering College (NEC) was established in 1994, as a non-profit organization under private sector initiative, to function as center for advanced learning in engineering and allied sciences. It has been offering the Interdisciplinary Water Resources Management (IWRM) Program since the beginning July, 2007 under the support of Crossing Boundaries (CB) Project funded by Government of the Netherlands.

Shah Alam Khan

Professor and Director

is Director of Institute of Water and Flood Management (IWFM), Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). He obtained his Ph.D from Drexel University, USA and his masters in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Rhode Island, also in the US. He has a number of papers published in journals to his credit, and has contributed to several books as well. He has also taken on consultancy jobs at various points in his career for public and private enterprises. Professor Khan will provide research support, guidance and field survey and methodological inputs.

M Shahjahan Mondal

Associate Professor

is currently an Associate Professor at IWFM. He holds an MSc in Water Resources Engineering from BUET and a PhD from Central Queensland University in Australia. Dr. Mondal has a number of publications on water resources planning and management in leading journals. His current research interest is in the institutional aspects of water and related resources management. Professor Mondal will give necessary inputs in field work, research management and be responsible for the overall reporting and research coordination.

Rezaur Rahman

Professor

is currently associated with IWFM. He is a Civil Engineering graduate of BUET and did his Masters from Department of Geography and Environmental Engineering of the Johns Hopkins University, USA. Prof. Rahman holds a PhD in Environmental Engineering from University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, USA. At the national level, Prof Rahman has been involved in preparation of National Adaptation Program of Action (NAPA) for climate change and Climate Change Strategy and Action Plan (CCSAP) of Bangladesh. He will lend the project support and guidance to research and in field measurements.

Uthpal Kumar

Research Fellow

is a graduate in Environmental Science from Khulna University, Bangladesh and a MSc in Water Resources Development from the Institute of Water and Flood Management of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology(BUET). His interest areas include Integrated Water Resources Management, Community Based Watershed Management and Climate Change Issues with an especial focus on southwest coastal region of Bangladesh. He is now working as research fellow in the Peri-Urban Project and also preparing for a Phd under this project.

Anjal Prakash

Project Director

is the Senior Fellow at SaciWATERs. He has 12 years of experience in the sector and has worked extensively on the issues of ground water management, gender, natural resource management and water supply and sanitation in India. A graduate from Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai India, Dr. Prakash holds PhD in Environmental Sciences from Wageningen University, The Netherlands. Dr Prakash has also authored a book titled "The Dark Zone: Groundwater Irrigation, Politics and Social Power in North Gujarat" published by Orient Longman, and has contributed several papers to leading journals. He is currently editing two books on Water and Health and Water Resources Policy in South Asia. He is coordinating this action research project in South Asia.

Sreoshi Singh

Research Fellow

holds an M Phil in Regional Development from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi and is a PhD candidate with Center for Economic and Social Studies, Hyderabad, India. She has worked on subjects concerning poverty, livelihood, health and gender. She specializes in urban development and planning and has special interest in various socio-economic and environmental aspects of urban areas for policy planning. She is also co-editing the book on Water Resources Policy in South Asia to be published by Sage. Sreoshi has worked in the Crossing Boundaries project of SaciWATERs since 2008 and presently leads the Hyderabad research team for this project.

Vishal Narain

Lead Researcher

is an Associate Professor in the School of Public Policy and Governance at the Management Development Institute, Gurgaon. He holds a PhD from Wageningen University, the Netherlands. His research spans a wide range of subjects in the realm of water policy and institutions, local governance and peri-urban issues. He is the author of ‘Institutions, technology and water control: water users’ associations and irrigation management reform in two large-scale systems in India’, published by Orient Longman. He is involved in the research component for the research sites in Gurgaon, and is responsible for lending the entire knowledge support in report consolidation and final dissemination.

Aman Dewan

Research Associate

Aman Dewan is a Research Asssociate at the SaciWATERS peri-urban water security project. He holds a Masters degree in Sustainable Development Practice from TERI University, and has done his bachelor's in Sociology from Sri Venkateswara College - University of Delhi. Prior to joining SaciWATERS, he interned with various organizations like Aarohi, Development Alternatives and Lupin Foundation. This has helped him get exposed to the cross-sectoral nature of Development issues, and thus understands the need to view issues holistically. His interests lie in the areas of Social justice, equity studies, stakeholder mediation and conflict resolution. He believes that an open communication is a key to solve various development problems.

Shaili G

Research Associate

Shaili G. has earned a Master's Degree in Environmental Science and Technology from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad. She is also pursuing her PhD under External Programme from the same university. Prior to joining SaciWATERs, Shaili has worked as a consultant for APITCO Limited, a premiere Technical Consultancy Organization. At SaciWATERs, she is designated the role of a Research Associate for the the Peri-Urban Water Security Project. Her work involves Action-based Research, Communications and Networking Component of the project. An academic topper at all levels, Shaili’s interest lies in the field of Climate Change.

Nani Babu

Research Officer, GIS

Nani Babu holds a Master's Degree in Geo-Informatics from Adikavi Nannaya University, Rajahmundry. He has been working in this field from past three years. He has previously worked with APSRAC for the project – “National Wetland Inventory Assessment”. He also worked in SACON as a Junior Research Fellow for the project - “IGBP-LULC Dynamics and Impact of Human Dimensions in Indian River Basins”. He was involved in Empirical Modelling for the future scenario in the IGBP-Project with NRSC (ISRO) team, Hyderabad. He is presently working as a Research Officer, GIS for the Peri-Urban Water Security Project.

Ashutosh Shukla

Project Leader

earned his MS in Land and Water Resources Engineering from University of Philippines in 1989. He joined Nepal Engineering College (NEC) after more than twenty years of teaching and research engagement in Tribhuvan University. His research interest and the area of research focus has been farmer led integrated land and water management. He has been working on systems approach to water resources planning. He has also been responsible as a research coordinator in Interdisciplinary Water Resources Management Program underway at NEC in support of Crossing Boundaries Project.

Research Fellow

obtained his M.Sc in Interdisciplinary Water Resources Management from Nepal Engineering College a. Before joining this project, he was engaged as Interdisciplinary Science Associate in Environment Management program of Melamchi Water Supply Project. He also worked as Research Assistant for two years in an IWRM program of Nepal Engineering. Prior to this, he worked as Research officer in Socio-economic, Agro forestry and Environment (SAFE) Concern, Kathmandu, Nepal and as a Ranger in Nepal Swiss Community Forestry Project, Ramechhap, Nepal in various forestry and environment sector. His special interest lies in water resources management, climate change and biodiversity conservation.

Mahesh Pathak

Assistant Professor

holds an MSc in Geospatial technology under Erasmus Mundus Scholarship – a joint degree from ISEGI, Portugal, IFGI Germany, and UJI Spain, in 2011. He also has a Master’s degree in Geography from Tribhuvan University, Nepal, 2003. He has obtained advanced GIS training from ESRI, USA in 2007. His experience in GIS application is the field of natural resource management and biodiversity conservation, public health, and local level planning. Currently his research focuses on Geospatial Ontology and Community GIS. He is a research faculty in the Peri-Urban Project and is providing support for GIS related activities.

Research Associate

is a post graduate in Environmental Science. She completed her Master's degree from Tribhuvan University in 2009. She performed a Case study on “Concrete and Corrugated Roof Rain Water Quality” as a part of Academic exercise for M.Sc in Environmental Science in 2007. She also participated as a Researcher in the research program of Physio-chemical analysis of Water quality of Bagmati River from Sundarijal to Chovar performed by Tri- Chandra Campus affiliated to Tribhuvan University in 2006. She is interested in Water resource management in the context of rural and urban environment.
