Status

The Post-Graduate Institute of Agriculture (PGIA) is a semi-autonomous institution of the University of Peradeniya established by an act of Parliament of Sri Lanka in 1975. The PGIA comes under the purview of Ministry of Tertiary Education of the Government of Sri Lanka. The funds could be forwarded directly to the PGIA. However, the PGIA should inform the University Grants Commission, Ministry of Tertiary Education and the Ministry of Finance of such assistance. The audited statements should be forwarded to the Government Audits at the end of each financial year. The funds could be disbursed under the direction and control of Board of Management of the PGIA.

In order to develop the critical mass for the Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM), the PGIA has implemented a postgraduate program on IWRM in year 2001 with the help of the private sector, NGO & public sector. The private sector has agreed to sponsor 5 postgraduate students per year for a 5 year period (10 scholarships have already given). This proposal is prepared in order to seek support from the other collaborative institutions to strengthen this newly developed programme. The postgraduates in this IWRM programme would help to fill the man power requirement in the private, public as well as NGO sectors and would also contribute to solve critical issues associated in the water sector through their post graduate research programmes. Sharing of regional resources would be the most cost effective way to strengthen the regional capacity building in the IWRM.
