Prof. E. Haribabu

Prof. Haribabu Ejnavarzala holds a Master's degree in Social-Cultural Anthropology from Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati, and a PhD in Sociology from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (1980). He taught at IIT Kanpur from 1980 to 1990 before joining the University of Hyderabad in 1990, where he became Professor of Sociology in 1993. Over two decades, Prof. Haribabu has taught extensively in the area of science, technology and society interface. In collaboration with the Department of Philosophy at the University of Hyderabad, he designed two interdisciplinary Master's level courses: Science, Culture and Society and Technology, Culture and Society. He has mentored 24 PhD students and 12 M.Phil students in the sociology of science and technology. His research focuses on the social and cultural implications of genomics for agriculture. He has published in peer reviewed journals including Journal of Biosciences, International Journal of Biotechnology, Journal of Food Policy, PLoS Biology and Current Science. Prof. Haribabu served as Adjunct Professor at the International Programs of the University of Iowa, Iowa City, USA from 2007 to 2013. He led significant research projects supported by the Rockefeller Foundation, European Research Commission (7th Programme on Science Ethics and Technological Responsibility for Development, 2008 to 2011) and IDRC Canada on Socially Inclusive Innovations for Development with colleagues in India and China from 2009 to 2012. He has also served as a consultant to several non-profit organisations on social dynamics relating to technology adoption. He served as Pro Vice-Chancellor at the University of Hyderabad from September 2011 to February 2015 and as Vice Chancellor-in-Charge from February to May 2015. He is currently Adjunct Senior Fellow at the Research and Information System for Developing Countries, New Delhi.
