Darjeeling generates 35 tonnes of waste every day. Centralised systems have failed. SaciWATERs is responding differently. Through a community-owned, decentralised waste management model, Dr. Kabindra Sharma from the SaciWATERs is working with women-led Self Help Groups in Ward 18, Darjeeling Municipality to turn household waste into compost, kitchen gardens, and community pride. Within months of training, families were growing their own vegetables using compost made from household waste. What began as reluctance became a movement. Implemented with support from UMI Fund, in partnership with Darjeeling Municipality and TIEEDI.
